Please add a confirmation dialog to redoing the migration from Arc Timeline 3

It appears that recently Arc Timeline 4 gained a button to migrate from Arc Timeline 3 again. I accidentally tapped on it, and even though I already did the migration months ago when I first installed it, it started the migration again and it seemed pretty slow. I needed to do other things with my phone but it seems like I shouldn’t close the app while the migration is in progress. Would you please either add a confirmation dialog before doing the migration again or at least detect that migration has completed successfully before and make subsequent migrations faster? Thanks!

Filed — the confirmation dialog is BIG-705, with your report as the founding case. It has a fair asymmetry going for it too: the Delete Old App Data button in the same feature family already asks first, while Migrate — the far longer operation — fires on a single tap.

Reassurance first though, since the accidental run deserves it: a re-run doesn’t touch your edits and doesn’t bring back anything you deleted. Anything already present gets skipped rather than duplicated — the one exception is samples the app had previously thinned out inside visits, which a re-run can restore; invisible in practice — and items you’ve edited, confirmed or merged since stay as you left them. The cost is the runtime itself: it walks the whole old database regardless, with recording paused and the app held open, which is why it’s slow even when it has nothing new to do.

On the button itself: it isn’t new — it’s the same one from your original migration, and it re-shows when a completeness check thinks the old database still holds something that hasn’t come across. That check compares the oldest data in the old app’s database against the oldest old-app data Arc Timeline 4 can see, and it has a known blind spot: data that arrived in the old app by import (Moves, GPX files, Apple Health workouts) counts on one side of the comparison but not the other — the data itself comes across fine; it’s only the check that can’t see it afterwards — so a timeline whose earliest data came from an import can keep the check unsatisfied no matter how many times migration runs. That one’s BIG-664 — and your second ask, recognising a completed migration and not offering it again, is exactly its territory, so your voice is on that ticket too.
