Arc 4 data import

Hi Matt,

I installed Arc 4 via the link in the ‘old Arc’. It took 48 hours to import my timeline data and when it finished it had made one big activity (32 mnths and 4 days) of my data, including all pictures and comments.

My iPhone 12 is updatet to the latest version.

Can I keep using the old Arc and what to do about Arc 4?

Hi @MZwart!

48 hours is insane! And given the messed up results I’m wondering if something went wrong along the way with the migration. Well clearly it did go wrong, but I’m meaning some sort of data termination or interruption that caused data corruption.

During the migration were there any issues you saw? Did the phone run out of disk space, have to try again, anything like that?

Yes absolutely. The two apps run on separate databases and don’t interact other than the one time migration. It’s fine to leave the old app installed and running for as long as you like.

At this stage I’m thinking the migration ran into issues (perhaps disk space, or perhaps iOS terminated the app at a critically bad point and then it had to attempt to resume the migration, but by then the database was already in a bad state).

So assuming that’s the case, what I’d do is delete the new app, then reinstall it from the App Store, and then try the migration again.

The migration should only take at most a few hours. For ~3 years of data though I’d expect it to take at most about 10-30 minutes! So yeah, make sure the phone’s plugged in to power, there’s no interruptions, no app switching, no terminations, no disk space issues, and see how it goes on second attempt.

Thanks for your reply. I’m gonna start from scratch. By the way, its about 13 years of data, ever since the Moves app stopped and I discovered Arc

Hah! You’ve got more data than me then! Mine only goes back about 10 years, because I sadly lost almost all of my Moves data due to database corruption around the time Facebook took over Moves app :sob:

Ai, what a shame!

I followed your suggestion and am happy to report that Arc 4 is (re-) installed and looks good. Really love the new ‘places view’. Thanks.

Me too! That one’s been long asked for, so it was satisfying to finally get started on it.

There’s a lot more that could be done with that new Places tab I think. What’s there now is just the start.

Though probably I’ll do more work on the Activity tab first, because that one’s still lagging behind the feature set in the old app.
