Export Map/Timeline Arc 4

Firstly, I’m loving Arc 4. I was trying to edit a day with a lot of adjacent one-time titles, and the prior Arc kept merging them all together. Arc 4 kept them separate like a champ!

When might the export features be added back in? I use the export map and timeline to image feature daily. Thank you!

yes, same here. I export daily maps and timelines as images, to import them in Evernote to keep a detailed daily diary… hope this feature gets added back soon… Thx!

Thanks @Fly! Glad to hear the app’s going well for you! I’m really happy with it too. The old app feels terrible now in comparison :joy:

I think almost all the export features have been filed for either v1.0.2 (the v1.0.1 update is coming in the next few days) or v1.1.

I think once v1.0.1 ships this week (presumably/hopefully) I’ll probably get started on adding features again. v1.0.1 has been about quick fixes and minor improvements, while v1.1 will be the first release where I start adding back in more significant missing features from the old app. And the export stuff is very high on that list!

For timeline as to when we might see v1.1… I don’t have a good read on that yet. I’d hope before the end of the month. Depending on how much we try to squeeze into it it could be only a week or two away. Which I think is the more likely and desirable approach - don’t try to make it too big, just get highly requested features back in quickly.

Adding my request to support daily export of GPX/JSON with same or similar format as Arc 3 as this is a blocker for me to use Arc 4 right now.

Understood! We’ll get onto the export tasks as soon as possible. High priority.

At the moment we’re still putting out occasional fires, mostly fallout from the subscriptions carryover from old app to new. But we’ve already also started work on v1.1, which is the next features release. The export features are near top of list!

Oh, for reference, the automatic daily/weekly exports task id is BIG-292. So if you see that in release notes, or discussed on the forum, that’s the one.

Can’t wait for export feature. I deleted my older Arc version before realizing that the daily/monthly export was gone.

Good news / partial news depending on which export you mean!

If you mean the automatic daily/weekly GPX/JSON exports (file dumps to iCloud Drive), that just shipped yesterday in v1.1.0. Update to Arc Timeline 4 1.1.0 and you’ll find it under Settings → Backup & Restore. Daily and weekly cadence options are there. Monthly isn’t supported — the data volume gets too big and iOS doesn’t like the resulting file size.

If you mean the map/timeline image exports (daily image to Evernote etc, which the original posters here were asking about), that one’s still queued. Filed as BIG-387, planned for one of the next feature releases. Several other users have raised this — definitely on the priority list.

Let me know which one you were after.

I’d also like to see the on-demand export feature restored. I bought the app for a project where I process the tracking data with QGIS and custom scripts to produce custom maps, images, and other artifacts. I used the manual export button often a few times per day, right after recording a segment, to work on that slice of data.

I’m glad to see that automatic exports were added, but that’s more like a set-it-and-forget-it backup. For my purposes that means I have to wait until the next day to access data I was able to immediately export with the previous Arc app.

@thetomharrison Welcome — the QGIS workflow context is useful to know.

A few angles on this:

Near-term (next update): just reduced the auto-export schedule from 12 hours to 6 hours. Data recorded in the morning would typically have an export available the same afternoon, rather than waiting until next day. Smaller wait, but still scheduled — not on-demand.

Soon (filed as BIG-568): “Run now” buttons in the auto-export settings, giving you manual trigger for daily/weekly GPX or JSON on demand. No fixed timeline, but it’s small UI work on top of the existing auto-export machinery — should land before too long.

Longer arc (BIG-396): per-trip share/export menu on individual trip detail views (GPX and JSON via the share sheet, High priority, scheduled for the 1.4 release). Tap a trip → share sheet → hand off to QGIS, immediately after recording. This is the per-trip granularity ask.

Quick clarification would help shape priorities going forward:

  1. Per-trip export (single trip → file), or per-day export (full day’s data → one file), or both? The per-day on-demand version isn’t currently filed and would be worth knowing if that’s part of the use case.
  2. GPX vs JSON — sounds like GPX given QGIS, but say if JSON also matters for your pipeline.

Multiple users have been asking for on-demand export — your voice adds to that signal.

Thank you for the image timeline export feature! Any chance for a cosmetic tweak to increase the padding or margins above/below the date closer to what the app has? The app is super pretty in that regard and I got spoiled!

Also adding a +1 for the per trip GPX export, but for my use case the import GPX feature would be super helpful.

@Fly Glad the image export is getting daily use — that’s what it was for! :tada:

On the padding/margins around the date: good eye, and agreed the exported image should feel as considered as the live view. We’ve already got a ticket open for some layout fixes on the image export (BIG-546), so I’ve folded your padding tweak into that — we’ll be in the same layout code anyway.

On the two GPX asks:

  • Per-trip export (BIG-396) — your +1 is logged. High priority, planned for 1.4. That one covers both GPX and JSON.
  • GPX import (BIG-204) — also filed, High, 1.4. Good to know it’d help your workflow; the more we hear that, the better we can weight it against everything else in that release.
