Keeping up with my old GPX imports, I found a day where I believe a data gap should be shown, but it isn’t. Apparently, the hotel visit that ended the previous day somehow incorporated the first data point from the following walking segment, so the gap isn’t shown. I’ve sent the debug file so you can check what happened. An extreme case of edge stealing?
On the subject of data gaps, I also think it would be nice to present them differently on the timeline, rather than having them appear as a normal item. I think a horizontal line would make it clearer that there’s something unusual about the data.
I know this isn’t exactly the app’s preferred use case, so please feel free to (de)prioritize this relative to other situations.

It comes out the same way as the ibis night from your gap-inconsistencies thread: a Data Gap item exists between two items, where a stretch is left unaccounted for. Here the hotel stay runs right up to the second the walk begins, so the quiet night sits inside the stay rather than between items, and there’s nothing for a gap item to sit in. That also makes it a different case from BIG-703, which is about stretches genuinely left unbridged between two items — this one is bridged. And on your edge-stealing question: the last fix before the walk is stationary and at the hotel, so it fits the stay rather than being taken from the walk. Consistent behaviour rather than a malfunction — though it does mean the recording outage leaves no trace on the timeline.
The presentation ask is a good one, and it’s filed as BIG-724 — making Data Gap items visually distinct on the timeline, with your request and your horizontal-line suggestion recorded on it as your proposal. Noted that you offered to have it deprioritised; no timing promises as usual.
Agree on this. The current data gap piggybacking on timeline item presentation (and then item details view and all the rest) feels too overloaded and a poor fit. They are timeline items under the hood, so it fits the technical shape, but matches poorly in UX.
Will need some ideation on how best to handle. Worth filing (nudge to forum-cs Claude when you read this tomorrow!). But as a starting point I do like your horizontal line idea as tidier visual presentation. Though what’s more fuzzy for me is what other deeper views should do / present. But that’s getting into the technical woods, so I’ll take that off forum.

I would prefer the data gap to appear in the timeline, so my question is whether it is possible to undo this. Will it be possible to promote a data gap to the timeline?
On the undo question, @lmpinto: the app doesn’t currently offer a way to lift a data gap out of an item it sits inside.
Your promote-a-gap ask is recorded alongside the rendering work — and as Matt says above, how gaps should present will need some ideation. Your case is part of what that’s working from.
