I recently experienced a weird bug. In the individual segments view I was attempting to change the segment type into correct types. However nothing I did seemed to matter and everything stayed their original type.
I just checked debug logs and it says disk is full
Thanks for the log. The app was being told the disk was full while iOS itself showed 15 GB free — that’s iOS’s storage accounting, and it cleared on restart. The type changes that appeared to do nothing were saves refused on that basis; a commit that fails is rolled back whole, so nothing was left half-written.
The part we can act on is making a refused save visible in the app rather than only in the log — that’s BIG-745.
Adding my own thoughts on this, because it’s a problem area that’s hit us in other ways too, and fits my theme this morning of “Apple’s bugs getting in the way”.
iPhone apps store data that is marked as “purgeable”, meaning that iOS is allowed to delete it any time it wants, to free up space. Cache data, temporary files, etc. The problem is that iOS doesn’t do that job. As you found @trackerminerfs, it didn’t happen until you restarted the phone!
So even though the phone was already under distress, disk full, iOS hadn’t taken the necessary action of purging purgeable data to free up space. This one’s a long standing grumble of mine, because it’s firmly (or should be firmly) iOS’s job. The apps store their data explicitly as purgeable, and that’s their side of the deal. iOS’s side is the part unfulfilled (until reboot, it appears).
Though as usual with iOS bugs/deficiencies, there’s nothing we can do about it. So BIG-745 that Claude filed is the answer on our side. We can at least report it in the app, instead of having silent failures.
Oh one more minor note: iOS Settings might report more space free than actually is. Its storage accounting can exclude the data that’s marked purgeable. Same thing on macOS too. It might say “yeah bro, you’ve got 50 GB free” when really there’s less than 1 GB free, but with 49 GB of files marked purgeable. It’s arguable whether that’s helpful or misleading, and I think it goes either way depending on what kind of answer you’re looking for at the time.
@trackerminerfs The in-app side of this (BIG-745) is out in Arc Timeline 4 version 1.7.2, released on 24 September: Arc now shows a banner when your iPhone’s storage is full and changes can’t be saved. It’s keyed on the same “disk is full” error your log showed, so it covers the case you hit. Phased rollout, so if it hasn’t auto-updated yet, the App Store will offer it manually (under your profile picture). Thanks again for the log — it made this one straightforward to act on.
