Visits list is great but seems to often not work well for me. Map seems often blank or it takes a long time to pan to location rather than just showing them first:
I noticed that for some period before from a few years ago, there is a walking trip of 45 months and 200+ miles. Checking a few days in which such occurred, other visits and travel periods such as by car look normal. I’m not sure how such happened or how to fix it. Maybe that is related.
Yeah I think there’s a slow database query problem there. The same view in old Arc Timeline loads much faster. So I’m betting there’s some inefficient database index use, and fixing that up will massively improve the loading time of the list and the map when there’s a lot of Visits to load.
Not sure what you mean by this one. In Visits List view there’s long press to get a context menu with “View in Timeline”. But I’m not sure how that would relate to Visit Details view? I’m missing a connection there I think.
Yeah I’d very much like to get search in soon! It’s a significant missing feature. I’ll add it to the current work cycle, in the hope that I find the time to get started on it. It might not actually be all that time consuming to build. It feels like a more complex feature than it actually is, in terms of implementation details.
Is this in data that was imported from Arc Timeline? Might be worth checking whether you’re seeing the same incorrect items in Arc Timeline app too. It might’ve just imported across that way.
I see the Visits list item context menu for View in Timeline. From that list, one can select a visit to see details. It’s that screen where a View in Timeline I think would be helpful rather than needing to go back to select such.
Of a walking item of 45 months, it’s in Arc Timeline. That likely I imported from backup in Timeline as once I switched phones without an iCloud restore. An example:
I see the long press to view in timeline. From that visits list, you can select a visit to see details yes? It’s there that there’s no view in timeline which would also be helpful.
I don’t think I’m understanding here. If you tap on a Visit in the list, it goes to the Visit Details view or that Visit. If you long press on a Visit in the list, you can choose “View in Timeline”. So you’ve got access to both?
Yes I’ve got access to both. It is that sometimes I want to go to the visit details view and logically having view in timeline on that screen from the menu I think is also useful rather than needing to go back and then select it.
Oh so, you mean, tap from Visits List view through to a Visit Details view, then on that view have a menu option for View in Timeline? Like, in the “…” menu that has Edit Segments etc?
Hmm. Ok, in that case I think that’s doable. I’ll make a note to give it a try!
Yes exactly that. Cuz sometimes I might want to view details first and then not have to go back.
Btw in one of those detail views, or maybe a view from within that view (there is one?), selecting a menu sometimes freezes the UI; perhaps since some slow query is running or maybe something is running on the UI thread when it doesn’t need to be? Just a guess.
Later perhaps there could be improved places merge? Visits such as:
Store
Store - City
Perhaps such is from place source. I may not always know which places can be merged yet I often find them when verifying visit when it shows I have x visits to both. Maybe place details view could use such yet maybe even when verifying a visit there could be a long press to merge.
Timeline cleanup and confirming visits. Now I think maybe such could use some improvements?
Main thought: I better understand a visit only when seeing it in full context and full timeline. To just show visits, car, etc. separately and it showing prev/next, that to me isn’t clear to instantly understand is that correct. I might want to scroll up down, use memory to think oh there’s some place that is missing and needs to be extract, or is it this or that place closeby, …
Maybe some condensed view that shows all and then unconfirmed ones in a different way? I don’t know. Checkboxes, tap and hold to confirm in daily timeline, or some other way; I’m not sure what is best. I just feel the current way isn’t great.
The latest Editor beta pulls my timeline together much “neater” than Arc Timeline, which is great. Feel like I’m making less edits to get it accurate.
Will the ability to add Workouts to the timeline, from, say, Apple Watch, come to the beta? It works well in the main Timeline app; I don’t usually bring my phone with me on runs so the ability to add in the workout is really useful
At the moment I‘m still using ARC Timeline as my major tool, keeping all my visits and tracks tidy, for health sync or export.
As ARC Editor becomes more and more attractive, I’m wandering what will be the best way to switch.
Can I just delete the previously imported data in the ARC Editor database and reimport the actual OldLocoKit content? Will this interfere (or duplicate) any data meanwhile tracked by ARC Editor? And will this also be the correct procedure for the first release version?
I’ve basically been prioritising each feature addition based on beta tester feedback. Prioritising based on what people actually say they want / miss from Arc Timeline, instead of just going with my gut. And how that you’ve said you want it, that bumps it up to the top of the priorities
In truth it’s also almost top of my own list. I literally only go into Arc Timeline now just to import my surfing workouts. Though I’m not even sure why - it’s not like I’m going to import Arc Timeline’s db back into Arc Editor again. At this point Arc Editor records everything better, cleaner, more accurate, better processed. So I really don’t want old Arc Timeline’s data coming in again and messing things up!
But yeah, it’s now right up the priorities list, so hopefully I’ll get onto building it soon, for one of the next few beta releases
Right now Arc Editor does a much better job of recording and processing the data. It’s just better. So personally I don’t want any new data from old Arc Timeline coming in to mess things up. Arc Editor’s data is better.
But then what if you haven’t been using Arc Editor consistently while it’s in beta? What if there’s gaps in the timeline? At that point you’ll want to be able to import portions of your Arc Timeline data, rather than the whole old database.
So I think what it’ll make sense to do is make Arc Editor capable of importing Arc Timeline’s JSON exports. Then we can export individual items, individual days etc, from Arc Timeline, and tidily import those into Arc Editor, filling in any gaps.
The current “old LocoKit importer” feature in the beta will only import data that’s before the earliest data date in your current Arc Editor database. So it’s great for a first install import from Arc Timeline to Arc Editor, but not really useful at any point after that. It’ll just check the earliest data date and conclude “ok looks like there’s nothing to import before the earliest date, so I’ll import nothing”.
So yeah, that ability to import selective portions of data from Arc Timeline will be key. I’ll make sure that gets built.
Selective import can be useful in some cases, but when time comes to switch and use ARC Editor as the major tool, I‘d prefer a fresh import of the maintained content. Is there any way to entirely purge the ARC Editor DB and start with a fresh OldLocoKit import?
