Arc constantly shutting down in background

Can someone help me please , for several months now I keep getting the message arc has stopped working in the background , I also have the arc recorder app running in the background but it is becoming a pain having to restart th arc app upto 5-10 times a day as it is vital I am recording my whereabouts each day , I have paid for the lifetime subscription but feel the app is massively letting down my expectations since paying forth service when before it worked fine when it was free to use , many thanks

Hi @Fatdad!

That’s definitely unusual behaviour. That shouldn’t be happening. The first step will be to check to make sure Arc Timeline has all the correct permissions in iOS’s Settings app.

  1. Go into Settings app → Apps → Arc Timeline
  2. Make sure that “Location” is set to “Always”
  3. Make sure that “Background App Refresh” is turned on

Another possible cause could be use of Low Power Mode. Though in practice I don’t see heavy use of Low Power Mode really causing problems. But it potentially could result in the app being terminated more often in the background, so it’s something to keep in mind.

Though honestly, I think your best option at this point is to install the Arc Timeline Editor public beta, and move over to using that instead!

Tap the link there to go to TestFlight to join the public beta.

Then once you’ve got that installed, go to the settings view (gear icon at top left), then to Debug Info → Database → “Old LocoKit database import”.

That import might take about 30 minutes. Then once it’s finished you’ll have all your Arc Timeline data in the new app!

The new app is much more reliable. And it also records higher quality data. It’s at this point the much better app of the two! And it’s also very close to being finished, and published on the App Store proper. So now’s a good time to transition over.

Hi

Thank you for your response .

Once I have installed the beta version and transferred the data to this which off the following apps do I allow to run in the background and which do I need to delete to enable the app to run smooth

Arc timeline

Arc recorder

Arc editor

@Fatdad, I’d say leave them all running in the background for a week or so, until you’re happy with the new app. Then at that point you could turn off recording in Arc Timeline (which will also turn it off in Arc Recorder). That’ll then leave only Arc Editor running.

Personally I have all three running all the time, because it’s my job! There’s no harm in it - there’s no noticeable extra battery drain. But yeah, once you’re happy with Arc Editor there’s no special reason to keep the old ones running.

Oh I wouldn’t delete any of them though, at least not in a hurry. There’s no need to delete them (unless you’re running low on space on your phone), and having them all still installed with all their data present will keep your options open until you’re fully settled in to the new app.
