Arc Editor public beta 9

1.0 (build 32), 2025-12-09 09:21 (Tokyo)

New Features

  • Automatic iCloud Backups (BIG-168): Timeline data now backs up automatically to iCloud Drive. Enable via Settings (gear button) → Backup Settings. Background incremental backups run daily when device is idle. Backups use gzip compression significantly reducing storage size. Each device backs up to its own directory preventing multi-device conflicts.
  • Added Notes import for JSON database imports - previously exported notes are now restored during import (BIG-235)
  • Added import resume/recovery - interrupted imports can be resumed or abandoned from the import view instead of starting over (BIG-238)

Improvements

  • Gear button now opens Settings view with Backup Settings, Debug Info, and Debug Logs options (BIG-243)
  • App Documents folder (including database and logs) accessible via Finder when iPhone connected to Mac (BIG-242)
  • Sample pruning now triggers when paging through weekly views, not just daily views (BIG-229)
  • Calendar sync now checks for updates every minute instead of every 5 minutes (BIG-246)
  • Export date format changed to ISO8601 for better portability; imports remain backwards compatible with previous format (BIG-121)

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed tab bar incorrectly reappearing when sliding sheet while in detail views (BIG-245)
  • Fixed top search result not being tappable in Item Edit and Segment Place views (BIG-245)
  • Fixed leaving time predictions not showing early in visits when duration is shorter than previously observed visits (BIG-230)
  • Fixed leaving time predictions not showing when current time of day is earlier than typical leaving times (BIG-244)
  • Fixed calendar sync occasionally clearing all events for a day (BIG-246)
  • Fixed debug log search not accepting taps

Nice update. I wonder is it possible iCloud backups might at times use significant battery?

One day I was in the car much of the time, battery usage that day was:

59% Arc Editor

12% Perplexity

6% Marvis (Music app)

6% Maps

5% Safari

….

In the car using a qi2 charger battery continued to drain, such that with an iPhone Air and low power mode it seemed to alternate between charging a bit and draining while overall it slowly drained. I couldn’t figure out why until I checked battery usage the next day and saw it was Arc.

I have noticed similar behavior with this beta version: high battery usage, but only on some days, not always! To run random tests, I occasionally close and reopen the app, but I haven’t been able to find a pattern in battery usage. Sometimes it’s normal, as it always has been in previous versions, and other days it’s very high. What can we check?

It won’t be the backups, except for the first time. It completes a full backup once, which can take a while (I think maybe 15-30 minutes for my own database? Can’t remember exactly).

But after that, each incremental should complete in only a few seconds. You can check how long they’re taking for you by going into the Backup Settings view and tapping Back Up Now. I just tried it on my phone and it took 3 seconds.

So yeah I don’t think it’ll be the backups. It’ll be something else.

For high usage while in the car and on charger… that was a weird sometimes problem with old Arc Timeline app too. Though I can’t see why it would be - Arc Editor doesn’t change its behaviour when on power, unlike how old Arc Timeline did. And the various scheduled tasks that run when plugged in to power will only run when in Sleep Mode (ie not actively recording, so not when driving in a car).

A bit of a mystery then. Hopefully some clues will surface over time…

Have a look in the Debug Logs view, and hunt about for the time period where you suspect the high battery use was. See if anything stands out in the log files. Clues might be the same thing repeating many times. Or just… anything really, if you think it might be odd, let me know what you find!

I don’t recall ever having such an issue with Arc Timeline using 50% plus battery life; it was only Arc Editor and only that day.

Maybe it is not backup yet it was being outside the whole day with only access to a car qi2 charger that seemed to not be able to keep up and charge even when I was in the car for several hours. So I should have been able to maintain near full battery life given the amount of time in the car but for some reason Arc Editor did something that day. Plus now using iphone Air I’m more concerned with maintaining such yet normal Arc Editor battery usage seems fine; it was just that one day

I saved the log and will send to you. Thank you Matt.

Yeah that sounds like something not normal operation but something going very wrong, like something getting stuck in an endless loop, using up CPU endlessly. Until something finally caused it to stop. Maybe the app was terminated, breaking it out of whatever loop it was stuck in.

Hopefully the logs will tell some detail!
