Arc 4 and importing

Hi. First of all Arc 4 is great! So much more responsive and can go through old days with such speed. Awesome!

A number of years ago when I moved to a new phone I did a manual import into Arc. That mostly worked but there were issues for certain weeks. I saved down from my old phone to iCloud and have occasionally been importing days where there are issues. The last upgrade to this in the previous Arc was awesome as could see all of the different sections to import or not!

I’ve tried to do this with the new version 4 but it is showing all GPX or JSON as greyed out when going to the iCloud folder. Do I need to move everything over to a new folder?

Thanks!

Hi @Starmir! Glad you’re liking the new app! It is much faster eh. And the recorded data quality is also better, which is another pleasing upgrade. I basically never go into the old app now other than when it’s my job to. The new app is much more pleasant.

Ah, are these JSON files from the old app? If so, the new app doesn’t support them yet. The schema has changed. New database is tidier and stricter, and JSON export format has changed as a result.

But we’ve got tasks filed for this already, and they’re all high priority for inclusion in upcoming updates. The issue numbers are BIG-389 and BIG-399.

Once those are landed, you should be able to both import from old app JSON files, and to select individual files for import. The current importer in the new app only supports whole database imports (it only accepts a folder not a file), and only the new JSON schema.

But yeah, both those two issues are already marked high priority, and filed for one of the upcoming updates!

Oh wait I just realised you mentioned GPX. Are you also wanting to import GPX? If so that’s a whole other thing. GPX import is quite a different beast, due to GPX not mapping cleanly to either old app or new app’s databases, required fields, etc. In the old app it’s quite a chunk of separate code and UI.

But if GPX import is a priority for you, that’ll be important to know, so we can prioritise on our side appropriately.

I’m not sure about him, but I use GPX import to record my flight information. So, GPX import (or FR24 import) would be important for me.

Ah yep, understood @lmpinto. GPX import is now marked high priority! (Issue number BIG-204).

I’ve also made sure we’ve got FR24 importing filed too (BIG-454).

That was actually the big new feature I started working on for the old app two years ago, but that triggered me to say “screw this” to the old codebase and instead start on the ground up rewrites. The old codebase was such a nightmare to work with when trying to add new features on top that I pivoted hard to doing LocoKit2 and Arc Editor / Arc Timeline 4 instead.

And now here we are with the sparkly clean new codebase, super easy to add new features on top of! :tada: So FR24 flight importing is back on the table as a built in feature :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Though I’m not sure how soon I’ll be able to get to that. I’m still rushing out updates to match parity with the old app. That could go on for a few more releases yet - v1.1, v1.2, maybe v1.3.

That’s great to hear that we will see them in a new update! Format isn’t an issue for me, I just need a way of importing from the old app. I have an older entry that was originally converted in the Moves transition that has become a mess on the new app with data missing and entries grouped together. It looks fine on the old App so I’ll wait to just import that day specifically when the update occurs. Thanks!
