I’m a native Japanese speaker living in Japan, but I prefer to use my iPhone and Mac with the UI set to English, and I’d like to use Arc Timeline 4 in English as well.
As mentioned in the “Place name localization/normalization” thread (Place name localization/normalization), Arc sends the phone’s language with each Google place lookup. Because of that, using the app in English means Japanese shops and restaurants come back with romanized or translated names. They don’t register at a glance the way the original Japanese names do, which is a small but constant friction when looking back through my timeline. And since these are proper nouns, I’d simply prefer to see them as they’re actually written. If a place’s original name is in English, English is perfectly fine.
It would be great to have a setting that controls the language of place data independently of the app’s UI language.
Thanks for considering this, and for all your work on Arc!
Though I’ve also noted that Google Places database is inconsistent in this way too. Like, for some places it will have various translations and others not, while also for some places it won’t have the original Japanese name but instead only the English version. Which seems the worst case. So I end up with a timeline that’s sometimes a mix of Japanese and English with no consistent pattern.
Though for your ask, that’s something we could definitely do! I’m thinking we… well, Claude will probably not like me describing specifics yet. I get told off for making commitments on the forum But I’m imagining a setting in Map Settings that allows for overriding the map language, and also a setting (perhaps in another view) for overriding the Place Results language. Though for the record, I’m not committing to that! That’s just my imagination, at this point.
My personal preference is app UI in English, map in local language (most often Japanese or Thai for me), and Place Results also in local language. So I can imagine I’d make use of both of those settings, if they were available.
