Battery drain is excessive iOS 27

Context: iOS 27.0.1 on iPhone 13 Mini

Yesterday Arc used 18% of my total usage. While in the background. It’s unusable like this any suggestions?

I’m likewise seeing increased battery drain lately, at least roughly coincident with iOS 27.

@pokflylice Thanks for the screenshot. Rather than guess at suggestions, a few details will tell us what was going on that day.

Two notes on that screen. The Background hours are always large for Arc, because the app is always running, either recording or in its low-power sleep mode, so that figure is normal and doesn’t say much by itself. And the percentage only counts time the phone was off the charger, so how long it was unplugged that day matters a lot to what the number means.

The most useful thing is Arc’s own diagnostics for that day. On the Timeline tab, go back to 1 October with the ‹ arrow beside the date, tap the ⋯ button at the top right of the map, choose Export Diagnostics, tap Continue, then choose Mail from the share options and send it to matt@bigpaua.com rather than posting it here (it includes that day’s location data). That shows what Arc was doing through the day, which the battery screen can’t.

Two smaller things alongside:

  • A screenshot of the main Battery screen for 1 October, scrolled to include the list of apps, plus roughly how long the phone was off the charger that day.
  • Whether anything is different about the heavier days compared with the lighter ones — how long the phone was off the charger, or whether it felt warm.

Could be something specific to some users. If it helps, seems ok on iOS 27.2 beta.

@pokflylice Thanks for sending both.

Arc’s own log for 1 October shows the recording side running the way it does on your other days: about an hour and a half of recording, and most of the rest in its sleep mode. It also answers the off-the-charger question: the phone was unplugged for around eleven and a half hours that day, which is the window the percentage covers.

One thing the log did catch is worth checking. A few times that day the charger connection dropped and reconnected within a couple of seconds, which isn’t something that happens by hand. It usually means a cable, charger or connection that isn’t seating properly, and an older battery holds less charge, so the same work shows up as a bigger percentage for every app. Could you check Settings → Battery → Battery Health and let us know the Maximum Capacity figure? And if you can, try a different cable or charger for a few days.

If you’re up for one more round, the most useful comparison would be one of the heavier Arc days earlier in the week (Tuesday or Wednesday): the same Export Diagnostics for that day, plus the Battery screen with the app list. Those would give a cleaner read of Arc’s part than 1 October does.

My phone’s battery health is 93%.

@pokflylice Thanks — 93% is a healthy battery, so that’s one thing ruled out.

The image came through, but the PDF and the zip didn’t. If you replied to the forum’s notification email, those replies post here in the thread, and the forum doesn’t accept zips or PDFs. A new email to matt@bigpaua.com gets them to us, and keeps the diagnostics (which include that day’s location data) off the forum. The Tuesday diagnostics will show what Arc was doing that day.

@pokflylice Thanks — both files came through by email this time, and the Tuesday export is exactly the one we wanted. We’re going through it now.

@pokflylice I’ve been through Tuesday’s export alongside the earlier one. There’s nothing you need to change in Arc’s settings, and nothing I’d ask you to do differently.

In our experience these figures do tend to settle back down on their own. If it’s still sitting high in a couple of weeks, do post here again.

Thanks for sending everything so quickly and exactly as asked.
