Hi ,

I use Arc Timeline 4 on an iPhone 17 Pro. Sometimes I’d like to carry an iPhone SE 2 on trips and have Arc record there instead. Both phones use the same Apple ID and iCloud.

A few questions:

1. Is this a supported setup? Can recording be on for one phone and off for the other without them interfering?
2. Should iCloud Drive Backups be turned off on one phone so they don’t overwrite each other’s backup folder?
3. What’s the best way to get the SE’s trips into the 17 Pro’s timeline afterwards? From the “Moving data to new phone” thread it sounds like overlapping data needs an AI-assisted merge. Has GPX import (BIG-204) shipped yet, and would it be a simpler option for this?
4. Is multi-device support or merging planned?

Thanks!

Hi @Smorg, in order:

**Two phones.** Yes, that works. Each phone keeps its own timeline and nothing passes between them, so recording on the SE with the 17 Pro’s recording switched off doesn’t interfere with either; the 17 Pro will simply have nothing recorded for those days. The switch is Timeline Recording at the top of Settings: off on the 17 Pro when you leave, back on when you’re home (and the SE’s off). When you first open Arc on the SE, if it asks you to choose a plan, Restore Purchases is the first thing to tap. It will then offer Existing Data Found with a restore from the 17 Pro; tap Start Fresh instead, so the SE holds only the trips it records.

**Backups.** Leave Automatic Backups on for both. Each phone writes into its own folder under iCloud Drive › Arc Timeline › Backup (one per phone, named with a long ID rather than the phone’s name), so they don’t overwrite each other. Keeping the SE backed up also keeps its trips safe.

**GPX.** GPX import has been in the app since 1.5 (the ⋯ menu on the map → Import GPX File). It’s designed for bringing in tracks from other apps and devices: GPX carries points and waypoints, so a trip comes across as the route plus a point for each stop, without the detail Arc records from its own recordings. I wouldn’t use it for this.

**Multi-device and merging.** Arc keeps each phone’s timeline as its own and doesn’t combine timelines from two phones. Your setup is the easier shape, since with the 17 Pro off those days are empty there rather than recorded twice. The merge is tracked as BIG-318, and I’ve added your vote to it.

Adding my own reply too, because this one’s fiddly, and I have thoughts!

Yep! As Claude described, this will work, and they’ll back up to separate folders on iCloud Drive, not messing with each other. And you’d ideally want backups turned on for both.

Yeah GPX export from SE (using the GPX auto exports feature) then import into your main phone, that’s currently the only working option. Which is less than ideal, because GPX is an inferior format, that drops considerable detail. Claude’s “I wouldn’t use this” is about right, because GPX is going to mean lost detail. That’s why Claude has pointed at BIG-318, which is the better option but not yet built. Actually also BIG-843 - similar/overlapping tickets.

But yeah, for now the options are either GPX export from SE to import on main phone, or AI assisted merging of the backups. The latter being … a much more complex and risky option.

So while that AI merge option might lead to the cleanest end results, at this point I’d advise against it too. The backups and restores are battle tested, but backup merging is not. It’s “bungee jumping without a trained professional” territory. Also if it went wrong partway there’d be no established way for us to help.
